History:
Roxas awoke in Twilight Town. He had no memories whatsoever. He was found by Xemnas who gifted him with the name Roxas. With no real alternatives in mind, or anything else for that matter, Roxas joined Organization XIII, making him Number XIII.
Roxas with no memories of his previous life or incarnation as Sora, was something of a zombie, barely able to string words together until they were taught to him.
On the sixth day of his life, he was summoned to the Dark Margin where Xemnas told him he had seen "him". When asked if he remembered his true name, Roxas did not. Xemnas left him with a word. "Sora." He also learned that he was a Nobody.
His eighth day, Roxas' care and training are left to Axel. He began going on missions for the Organization. His job was to kill the Heartless and release the hearts they contained, so they could be collected in Kingdom Hearts for the purpose of the Nobodies finding hearts of their own. He befriended Axel, and when Axel left on his own mission to Castle Oblivion, he was put in charge of Xion. It took a little longer, but he befriended her too, letting her join in their ritual of enjoying sea salt ice cream at the top of the clock tower at the train station in Twilight Town.
When Sora is placed in suspended animation, Roxas fell into a deep coma. While he was asleep, Xion visited him frequently, bringing him a seashell from every place she visited. He awoke on the twenty-first day.
As time with the Organization passed, he began to question the motives and why he was able to wield a keyblade. Although Sora's memory restoration was beginning to affect him and his personality, he still had no memories of Sora, beyond the name.
Spending his days on missions was not enough, Roxas was confused about how he was different from people with hearts and when Xion disappeared and was found again, he felt betrayed by Axel when he knocked her out to carry her home.
From that point on, things began to change. The Organization's plans for Xion to steal Roxas' power and make it their own were really beginning to come together as Roxas began to weaken. Wielding the keyblade became tiresome and difficult and he began to falter on his own memories.
Xion and Roxas are tricked into a fight where the sole purpose was to make them each think they were fighting a heartless, but was designed to have Xion eliminate Roxas. Axel intervened however and stopped them before the outcome could come to fruition. When Xion defected from the Organization, Axel finally came clean with Roxas, explaining her role and purpose within the Organization. Feeling betrayal once more, and certain the Organization wanted to eradicate him, Roxas also defected, leaving behind a declaration that Axel should have told him what he knew, and he wanted to know who he really was, and he couldn't trust Axel. He would trust whoever he found.
Axel appeared before him once more to try and stop him from leaving, reminding him that getting on their bad side would cause the Organization to eliminate him. He merely responded. "No one would miss me." With that, he walked away.
However, Roxas didn't know where to go and in fact didn't leave Twilight Town. Xion found him and in a projection showed him Sora's face. When it ended, she was there to say goodbye as she vanished, the memories she took rejoining Sora. She expressed her doubts about the Organization, and Xemnas and wished to ruin his plans. Roxas lost his memories of her with the projection, however in her last moments, he does remember her, but it was too late, she was gone.
With Xion gone, his power appeared to be restored as he awakened his ability to dual wield keyblades, Oathkeeper and Oblivion. He strengthens his resolve to find Sora, and free the Kingdom Hearts, hoping to bring Xion back to him. He headed to The World That Never Was.
Roxas was surrounded by Heartless, but he was saved when Riku appeared. He threw one of his keyblades at him and they fought the Heartless together before turning on each other. Riku taunted him, calling him Sora and implied he was too weak. Roxas shot back a reflexive answer that reflected his connection to Sora. Riku was forced to unleash his darker half to contain Roxas.
DiZ planned to use Roxas to wake up Sora, but he wasn't ready yet so he digitized Roxas and put him in a virtual version of Twilight Town, altering his mind to erase his previous memories and making him believe he'd always lived there and grown up there with Haynor, Olette and Pence. As Namine got closer to waking Sora, Roxas began to dream about him, seeing brief glimpses of his memories.
Strange things began to happen, such as Dusks beginning to appear, glitches and instances of freezing within the computer program. The Dusks stole a bunch of photographs with Roxas in them. At times, in his confrontations with them, a keyblade appeared to help him, but what it did or what he was supposed to do with it was beyond Roxas' knowledge.
He encountered Namine a few times, which causes a connection to Kairi to open up. Riku appeared before him, hidden by a cloak and asked him if he could feel Sora. Roxas was beginning to, with the flood of memories each night.
Axel appeared during the Struggle tournament, under orders to drag Roxas back to the Organization, but Roxas didn't remember Axel and is confused by his presence. Axel attacked him, but their fight was interrupted. While on the tower after the tournament with his friends, Roxas falls off, telepathically calling out to Namine, but he gets Kairi instead. He recognized her name from his dreams and when she asked about Sora's name, Sora spoke through Roxas, teasing Kairi with a comment, "Starts with an 'S'."
As summer vacation was coming to an end, Namine explained that Roxas was a Nobody and he needed to go meet Sora. Axel appeared once more, but DiZ froze the program and told Roxas to go to the mansion. He did so and encountered Namine in person. Namine told him that reuniting with Sora won't make him disappear, but would make him whole again. She was taken away by DiZ, but not before promising they would meet again.
Roxas went to find Sora in the basement of the mansion. His memories of his time before the program began to resurface, remembering that DiZ was the one who subjected him to that false reality. Angry, he destroyed DiZ's computer and set about finding him.
Axel appeared before him one last time, but it was too late. Roxas wields both keyblades to defeat Axel, and he promised to meet him in the next life. DiZ was there when Roxas entered Sora's room. Roxas learned the plan that he was needed to wake Sora. Furiously, he tried to slash at him angrily with both keyblades, however he vanishes because he was only a projection.
Sora's pod opened and Roxas laid eyes on his counterpart. Sadly, he told him he was lucky, and regretfully he admitted his summer vacation was over. He rejoined Sora's subconsciousness, not before telepathically calling out to him as well.
Canon Point: The moment before he vanishes, the end of his independent storyline.
Personality:
Roxas is a special Nobody. Not only can he wield the keyblade, but he appears to have actual emotions and feelings, much like someone with an actual heart. He should be emotionless, however aside from his humble beginning, once he awoke from his coma, he began to have a lot of feelings. Fear, anxiety, anger, confusion, happiness and camaraderie. Most notably perhaps, is when Xion disappeared, leaving to join Sora, tears spilled from Roxas' eyes, much stronger emotions than Nobodies should be able to feel. He also took on what she asked, with great determination to go find Sora himself, and made his goal ultimately to destroy Kingdom Hearts. He also felt betrayed by Axel when he found out that he was keeping things from him. This anger and hurt feelings led to him leaving the Organization. While the other Nobodies have their own personalities, their emotions aren't as deeply felt, and as Axel hypothesized, their emotions were more memories of how they used to feel when they were human. Roxas, since he didn't have any memories from being Sora, he could not possibly remember these feelings, and therefore must have been feeling them.
He appears to be gentle-hearted and generally caring when coming in contact with other people. He looks after the regular kids in the town, Xion and Axel with kindness. Even in his conflicts with Seifer, he isn't unnecessarily mean or cold, he just stands up for what he feels is right, much like his counterpart, Sora.
Once he had woken up and Sora's reawakening affected him, he becomes very inquisitive. He asks questions about who he is, what he's meant to be doing, the goals of the Organization and the identity of this 'Sora'. He often has other questions, such as wondering how people with hearts are different from them, and he almost always asks Axel. This inquisitiveness is simply foreshadowing to other parts of his personality.
Roxas is very hard working. Not only does he have his own missions to complete for the Organization, but when Xion temporarily loses her ability to wield the keyblade, Roxas agrees with Axel's idea for him to step up and kill twice as many heartless for her. When given a day of, he has no idea how to spend his day and finds himself wandering around aimlessly, asking others what they are doing to fill their time. The idea that children get a month off of school is horrifying to him, but he admits that perhaps a week he could manage.
Because Roxas has not been around long, and unlike other Nobodies he had no memories of his past life, he is very innocent. A great deal of things confuse him, very easily. Concepts like love and friendship are things he only understands, based on whatever Axel told him. The memories he does gain of Sora's are very few, and don't really answer many of his questions. Roxas has always had difficulty with his memories, not just Sora's memories, but his own. It takes a few times for anything to stick and it takes a conscious effort to remember things, such as how many days he's been around, Axel's name and his love for sea salt ice cream. Axel often asks him 'Got it memorized?' if it's important enough, and Roxas will use this as a memory trick for himself. He has in the past, turned the question back around to Axel as a statement, to let him know that he did in fact remember.
Roxas did attempt to be friendly with the other members of the Organization, but unfeeling that they were, he didn't have any success beyond Xion and Axel. In the program, he's very friendly with Hayner, Pence and Olette, something he desired to do, and he is for the most part, a cheerful person, despite his confusion. He's much quicker to temper than Sora however, but a great deal of that is thanks to the confusion that is often interlaced with his anger.
Many things catch Roxas' interest, and due to his lack of memories he has a lot more questions for Axel. He asks him about the other kids in Twilight Town, wondering if people are like that noisy and running around and Axel tells him that that's what people with hearts do, and also teaches him the concept of friendship. He wonders about Kingdom Hearts and the importance of it. He wonders if having a heart is all that important, but he doesn't understand because he doesn't have a heart. Axel however doesn't question their mission, they have to collect the hearts to make Kingdom Hearts and get their own hearts, in this way, he differs from Roxas because Roxas uses his confusion to question the fundamental basis of their organization. When they discuss what he has that he can't bear to lose, he expresses how scary it is to think he'd lose his memories of Axel or Xion, even though he shouldn't be able to feel such fear. This conversation was brought on because he met someone who had something he couldn't bear to lose. Often when Roxas meets people, he finds himself reflecting on them, something that the other Nobodies don't seem to do.
Surrounding Roxas appears to be a bit of a strange phenomenon. Not only does he affect Xion and pass on his powers, memories and feelings to her by design, but in fact he changes Axel. Axel who was perhaps impartial and without feelings, found himself getting very attached to Roxas, and Xion. Roxas and Axel were best friends, and the feelings of happiness and contentment came with that, not just for him, but Axel as well. Roxas was able to reform him, heartless or not. Sora has a similar skill, an ability to make friends wherever he goes, something that bleeds through to his Nobody.
As alluded to previously, Roxas' questions reach a breaking point and he exhibits a rebellious streak. He is not content forever to do what he's told, he wants to know why and he wants to know who he is and who Sora is. Despite knowing he's Sora's Nobody, he tells Riku he's nobody but himself. Once in the Twilight Town program and things begin to behave strangely, he actively searches for the cause of the abnormalities. He's not the kind of person willing to wait around and let things happen on their own. Even at the bitter end, he declares to DiZ "My heart is my own!" but when he realizes it's a fruitless endeavor, he sadly accepts his fate at last.
Skills and Abilities:
Roxas has a very high agility level, as he can be seen twisting around monsters in a reversal move. At this canon point, he is dual-wielding keyblades, and he has two: Oblivion and Oathkeeper. Roxas is very good with his keyblades. He is aggressive, more than Sora tends to be. Like Sora was, he is armed with basic Fire, Lightning and Blizzard spells, and he has two Limit Breaks - Event Horizon and Magic Hour. Both of his limit breaks use columns of light for maximum damage possible, similar to Sora's orbs of light. The difference between them depends on how many keyblades he is wielding at any given moment.
Roxas has semi-dormant telepathic links to Namine, Kairi and Sora and in distress may be able to call for them.
First Person Sample:
Why did things turn out this way? What did I do that was so bad I had to be locked up here? I don't understand everything Naminé said. It doesn't make any sense. She makes me so mad, she's really mean, too. I wanted to be friends with her, but she told me I shouldn't exist.
Even if it's true, you shouldn't say something like that. It made my chest hurt. It made me angry.
I don't get how Sora will make everything better. I've been dreaming about him and his friends every night for days now. The dreams are kind of weird, like they're real, but they're not.
She said I was Sora's Nobody. He and I are the same, two halves to make one whole.
I don't feel like that at all. Aren't I my own person? I don't feel like Sora, my name is Roxas. She said we have to go join together, she said I don't remember things. Why don't I remember anything? She said Axel is my best friend, but he's been trying to hurt me.
I'm going to find out what is going on one way or another. People are going to stop lying to me.
Third Person Sample:
He could hear his heart pounding, feel the heat rise to his face as Roxas let the anger take over. Just who did DiZ think he was anyway? Who did Naminé think she was? How dare anyone think it would be okay to do what they did to him?
Roxas was angry. Roxas was so angry he could barely see as he charged down the stairs, looking for some way out of this mess. It wasn't going to happen, he was not going to disappear into nothing. He wanted a life, a full life, and didn't he deserve it? Instead he was locked away in some fake town, isolated from anyone who was actually real. Why did this happen? There was still so much Roxas didn't know, didn't understand.
He burst into the basement and looked around, his mind cloudy with fury. In front of him, there was the computer terminal, that link to reality. How dare they lock him away and strip him of everything? In one moment, his eyes widened and his hands moved up to his head. A flurry of images and memories burst into his head all at once, warm memories that came with his friendship with Axel, the origin of his love of sea salt ice cream. It was followed with pain and anguish, sorrow that accompanied the things he'd done, the missions he'd undertaken and the truth that he knew behind them all. He remembered fighting with Axel, he remembered leaving and finally, he remembered that the Organization was a huge threat to his survival.
His head was pounding, it felt like he had mental whiplash. Roxas wasn't sure what memories went in what order, because it hurt to think. He dropped his hands and let out an anguished cry. Before he knew it, he felt the familiar weight of a keyblade settle in his right hand. The anger was overflowing. He slammed the keyblade into the computers, smashing them with expert stroke after stroke. He broke every inch he could think of until his anger was spent and he stumbled backwards, breathing hard.
Now he had to take care of those who wronged him.
